The WV Birth Policy Coalition met in Charleston in Senator Walt Helmick's office for a stakeholders meeting on May 8th. The purpose of the meeting was to allow participants to voice their questions and concerns regarding the credentialing of the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).

Mission Statement

Increasing access to the Midwives Model of Care in all settings is essential to the health and well-being of childbearing women and their babies. The West Virginia Birth Policy Coalition supports legislative initiatives that promote the autonomous practice of Certified Professional Midwives and Certified Nurse-Midwives in West Virginia and that ensure the availability of safe, evidence-based care during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum.

Tuesday, November 18th in Charleston, WV

Sarita Bennett, DO and Midwife, from Marlinton, WV testified in response to the legislative auditors report for the Sunrise Legislation application for CPMs, which was submitted in June 2008. She testified before the joint committee of the House and Senate known as the Government Organization Committee. Currently, it was recommended that the application be denied due to the low number of CPM's practicing in WV and the inability to justify the cost of starting an independent regulatory board.

Overall the response from committee members was positive and we were encouraged to continue working on our efforts.
