Docs to Women: Pay No Attention to Ricki Lake's Home Birth

Ladies, the physicians of America have issued their decree: they don't want you having your babies at home with midwives.
We can't imagine why not. Study upon study have shown that planning a home birth with a trained midwife is a great choice if you want to avoid unnecessary medical intervention.

In Maine, committee members were unanimous in determining that CPMs should have a clear process to acquire the five medications cited as important for the best outcome possible for home births. The committee was split over whether licensing was necessary in order to monitor CPMs if the following are needed: local anesthetics, oxygen, vitamin K, oxytocin in small quantities to stop uterine bleeding and treatment known as "prophylaxis" to protect newborn eyes.

An interesting article regarding a birth story from Ethiopia, including some startling statistics including: "The probability that an Ethiopian woman will die from a maternal cause during her reproductive life span is 1 in 27, slightly better than the 1 in 22 for all of Africa. Compare that to a probability of 1 in 4,800 for the U.S. or 1 in 8,200 in the U.K."
